Akuo opened its office in Lisbon in 2018. At the time, the renewable market development was blocked because demands to access the grid were exceeding the existing capacity and there was no regulation to prioritize. At Akuo, we saw this market failure as an opportunity.

The expected grid access right regulation emerged in 2019 and the first solar auction was launched in June 2019 with 1.4 GW of capacity. Based on a very long-term strategy and one year of preparatory work, we were able to reach the necessary level of competitiveness. Today, Akuo is one of Portugal's leading renewable energy producers.

Since day one, Akuo kept the same strategy: to develop and operate ourselves the assets on the long-term.

Akuo at the forefront of innovative solutions

Portugal is demonstrating important leadership in the transition to clean energy, especially in integrating electricity from renewables. The PNEC 2030 (“Plano Nacional de Energia e Clima”) aims at reaching 9 GW of solar energy which should be increased based on Repower EU and EN-H2 (“Estratégia Nacional para o Hidrogénio”), and Akuo is definitely willing to play an important role to contribute to these ambitious objectives.

Akuo has built a local team covering licensing, development, structuration, financing, construction and operation & maintenance skills. The team is currently focused on developing projects to optimize the secured grid injection capacity which include wind and storage.

Relaunch of Call for Tender – BESS Supply, EPC and O&M for Amargilha

Following the initial tender launched in December 2025, the Project Company has decided to relaunch the procurement process for the Amargilha project.
This decision is driven by the rapid evolution of BESS technologies, which now enables the implementation of more efficient and optimized technical solutions. The relaunch also reflects the increased maturity of the project, allowing for greater clarity in scope definition and technical requirements.
 
The Amargilha project is developed under application no. 73, submitted by Amargilha, Unipessoal, Lda (VAT no. 515 582 590), approved within the scope of the call RP-C21-i08 – Grid Flexibility and Storage.
The tender covers the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of BESS systems and associated infrastructure and is structured into three scopes:
  • Scope A – BESS Units: supply, commissioning, and maintenance of battery energy storage systems.
  • Scope B – EPC: engineering, procurement, and construction services across civil, electrical, and mechanical disciplines.
  • Scope C – Substation: construction and integration works at the associated MV/VHV substation.
This renewed process aims to ensure the adoption of the most advanced and competitive solutions currently available in the market, aligned with the project’s development objectives.
 
Relançamento do Concurso – Fornecimento de BESS, EPC e O&M do projeto Amargilha
Na sequência do concurso inicialmente lançado em dezembro 2025, a Empresa do Projeto decidiu proceder ao relançamento do processo de contratação para o projeto Amargilha.
Esta decisão resulta da rápida evolução das tecnologias BESS, que permite atualmente a implementação de soluções técnicas mais eficientes e otimizadas. O relançamento reflete igualmente um maior grau de maturidade do projeto, possibilitando uma maior clareza na definição dos âmbitos e dos requisitos técnicos.
O projeto Amargilha é desenvolvido no âmbito da candidatura n.º 73, apresentada pela Amargilha, Unipessoal, Lda (NIPC 515 582 590), aprovada no âmbito do Aviso RP-C21-i08 – Flexibilidade de Rede e Armazenamento.
O concurso abrange o fornecimento, instalação, operação e manutenção de sistemas de armazenamento de energia por baterias (BESS) e das infraestruturas associadas, estando estruturado em três lotes:
  • Lote A – Unidades BESS: fornecimento, comissionamento e manutenção dos sistemas de armazenamento.
  • Lote B – EPC: serviços de engenharia, aquisição e construção nas vertentes civil, elétrica e mecânica.
  • Lote C – Subestação: construção e integração de equipamentos na subestação MT/MAT associada ao projeto.
Este relançamento tem como objetivo assegurar a adoção das soluções mais avançadas e competitivas atualmente disponíveis no mercado, em alinhamento com os objetivos de desenvolvimento do projeto
