A key energy storage project supporting Portugal’s energy transition

Akuo is constructing SantasBAT, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 80 MW / 220 MWh, located in Borba, co-located with the  Santas Solar Photovoltaic Plant in the Alentejo region, Portugal. Designed as a natural extension of the existing solar facility, the project reflects Akuo’s commitment to supporting the evolution of renewable energy systems towards greater flexibility and reliability.

Hybridization: integrating storage into an operational solar power plant

SantasBAT is integrated in the Santas Solar Photovoltaic Plant, which has been operational since September 2024 and has an installed capacity of 181 MW.  

The battery system will store renewable electricity produced during the day and make it available during periods of higher demand or when solar generation is lower. This ability to shift energy production over time contributes to a more efficient use of renewable resources and supports the stability of the power grid. 

The storage capacity of SantasBAT is equivalent to the electricity required to supply a city such as Évora for approximately five hours. (approximately 55.000 people)

Strengthening grid resilience and renewable integration

As renewable energy capacity continues to grow, energy storage plays a crucial role in ensuring grid reliability. SantasBAT will provide essential ancillary services to the electricity system, helping to mitigate fluctuations inherent in renewable energy production and to reduce the loss of clean energy during periods of excess generation.  

By enabling greater integration of renewable energy, the project contributes to reducing reliance on fossil fuels, reinforcing Portugal’s energy independence and supporting the country’s decarbonisation objectives, including the national target of 85% renewable energy in total electricity production by 2030.

SantasBAT has secured financial support under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), within the NextGenerationEU framework, dedicated to investment in energy storage technologies. 
This support contributes to the development of infrastructure that enhances the sustainability and resilience of Portugal’s electricity grid.
