  • The signing of this contract will allow for the construction by Akuo of a photovoltaic solar power plant with an installed capacity of approximately 195 MW, including 57 MW dedicated to Imerys’ operations, located in Coke County, Texas, capable of producing 153 GWh of electricity per year.
  • This 15 year agreement will cover 30% of Imerys’ operations annual electricity needs with renewable sources.
  • This initiative will result in a reduction of Imerys group's emissions by approximately 67,000 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to 3% of its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) scope 1 and 2 emissions (2021 baseline).

Paris, June, 19th 2025, Imerys, the world leader in mineral specialties for industry, and Akuo, an independent developer and producer of renewable energy, today announced the signing of a power purchase agreement for the supply of renewable electricity. This agreement marks a significant step in Imerys' decarbonization strategy and underlines its commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

This contract complements Imerys' existing power purchase agreement initiatives, such as those already in place with solar farms in Cornwall in the United Kingdom, Hidd in Bahrain, Wuhu in China, and Ipoh in Malaysia.

Located in Texas, where Akuo already operates two wind farms, the Tennyson plant will be Akuo's first solar power plant in the United States. Its construction is expected to mobilize up to 400 employees and contractors. The commissioning of this new solar installation in the United States is scheduled for the second half of 2026. The contract will cover the electricity consumption of Imerys' plants for an annual volume of 153 GWh. Once operational, it will cover at least 30% of the annual electricity consumption related to Imerys' activities in the United States.

A reduction of over 1 million tons of CO2 over 15 years

These agreements are essential for Imerys to achieve its goal of reducing GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 (2021 baseline), in line with the trajectory of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. By engaging in this transition, Imerys not only strengthens its own environmental performance but also helps its customers to meet their own climate goals and advance their transition to a low-carbon economy.

"The climate crisis represents a pressing and large-scale threat, with profound environmental and social consequences. To address it, collective action from industries worldwide is needed to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, in line with the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement. Power Purchase Agreements like the one we have just signed with Akuo are powerful tools that help us achieve our ambitious emissions reduction goal, to offer products and solutions with an improved environmental footprint that help our customers create sustainable value" says Leah Wilson, Sustainability Director at Imerys.

"With the Tennyson photovoltaic power plant, Akuo proves that the distribution of renewable energy to companies interested in purchasing renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change is also a process of creating sustainable value. We are honored to be able to work with partners like Imerys to help them achieve their environmental goals," says Eric Scotto, Chairman and co-founder of Akuo.
