One of the largest batteries in France

Located in the South Province of New Caledonia’s main island, the Boulouparis mega battery marks a milestone in the territory’s energy transition. With a storage capacity of over 200 MWh and an output of 50 MW, it will be able to deliver electricity for 3 consecutive hours, thus providing a reliable solution to stabilize the power network and accompany the integration of renewable energies in the main island’s energy mix.

A project supporting the energy transition

This project meets a twofold challenge: securing the electricity supply and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Thanks to its latest-generation lithium-ion batteries, the facility will enable grid fluctuations to be smoothed out, excess solar production during the day to be absorbed and this power to be reinjected into the network during the evening period of peak demand. It will hence contribute to achieving New Caledonia’s ambitious targets of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2035 and substantially decarbonizing the mining sector.

A strong local presence

Akuo is building on a long-standing presence in the region, with several photovoltaic plants already operational including Kwita Wije, which is also in Boulouparis and includes a storage unit (3.1 MWh/ 6 MW).

Structured and community-oriented financing

The project is benefiting from the support of major financial partners such as Caisse d’Épargne Île-de-France, Banque de Nouvelle-Calédonie, the AFD, Banque Calédonienne d’Investissement and Bpifrance. It is also eligible for local and national tax schemes, encouraging the participation of investors in New Caledonia and mainland France.
