The project

Hisse un Arbre is an association whose goal is to sensitize and mobilize inhabitants through practical actions: plant trees that are endemic to the Indian Ocean Island of Reunion. Born of a desire to combine sports challenges and environmental actions, the Hisse un Arbre association’s leading ambassador is sailor Thibaut Lefevere, who has taken part in ocean races on a Class40 yacht. The miles sailed have been symbolized by the trees planted.

Reforestation and raising public awareness

The project, supported in 2022, is headed by a former Akuo group female member of staff and comprises two components: reforestation and awareness-raising. The planting of endemic trees has enabled ecosystems to be restored, and in particular the natural habitat of the sea turtles that had deserted the island’s beaches, too exposed, to lay their eggs. In partnership with the Centre d’Etude et de Découverte des Tortues Marines (CEDTM, the sea turtle research and discovery center), this long-term action is helping to shelter, under plant cover, these endangered specimens.

Strengthening the ties between children and their environment

The second project supported by the Akuo Foundation is about creating stronger ties between children and the environment. Its objective is to help schoolchildren learn about and preserve Reunion’s biodiversity via an introduction to ecology. TILAMP (Tisser des Liens avec Mon Pays) will enable trees to be planted and nature outings to be organized to help children connect with the natural heritage around them.
