Solar on degraded sites takes advantage of unused areas to accelerate the energy transition

Akuo Mortella

Using vacant land

Land availability is one of the key challenges for the development of renewable energy projects. Degraded land and unused sites (former dumps, industrial sites available for conversion, polluted sites, discontinued quarries, etc.) are propitious for the installation of ground-based solar farms, sometimes combined with agrivoltaics.

Bousquet d'Orb sets the example

Our first project on a degraded site was the Bousquet d'Orb solar power plant, which was connected to the grid in 2018. Built on a former coal mine operated until 1993 by Charbonnage de France, the 12 MWp power plant covers nearly 50 acres in Le Bousquet d'Orb, in the Occitania region of France. The site was not suitable for other activities because the soil is highly polluted. Its conversion to a solar power plant therefore gives this historical site a second lease on life.

Partnership with ECT to give industrial sites a second life

To take things further, we have teamed up with ECT, a company specializing in the recovery of inert materials from construction sites, to create a joint subsidiary, ACT-E. This partnership aims to develop a capacity of 100 MWp in the Paris region by making use of former industrial sites, such as in Annet-sur-Marne, where inert ground has been converted into a solar farm.

Floating Solar frees up space to accelerate the energy transition

omega

Floating solar, a technology for the future

The principle of a floating solar power plant is simple: standard solar panels are installed on floaters, held together either with metal structures or with other floaters. This set of PV modules creates islands, which stay in place by being anchored to the bottom or bank of the lake. Floating power plants are mostly installed on quarry lakes, or unused expanses of water.

Floating solar power plant has developed considerably in recent years all over the world and is forecast to see faster growth in the medium term. According to Deloitte, the global installed capacity could exceed 5 GW at the end of 2022 and reach 13 GW by 2025. This technology has the advantage of allowing the use of new surfaces, while minimizing conflicts.

cakuo_omega1

First industrial success with O’MEGA1

Akuo acquired this technology in 2019 and commissioned O'MEGA1, France's first floating solar power plant, in Piolenc (southeast France). The power plant is installed on a submerged site, rendered artificial by years of quarrying. With an initial capacity of 17 MWp, the plant was enlarged in 2022 to reach 22 MWp.

Scaling up

Following the success of O'MEGA1, we are developing many other projects and we are also involved in several groups working on this technology.

Solar power: the cornerstone of the energy transition

Akuo Curbans

An inexhaustible resource, available everywhere on Earth and now more competitive than fossil fuels, solar power has today reached maturity and has become essential.

Supplying renewable electricity is not the only goal of our solar power generation process

Akuo has been developing solar power production by installing dedicated power plants in all regions around the world. Beyond generating power, Akuo optimizes its solutions by providing tailormade responses to the social, environmental, and climatic needs and challenges of each region.

Storing solar power optimizes the management of power produced at our plants.

Combining power generation with a storage system reduces intermittency and grid connection costs. And beyond storage, the hybridization of our power plants can also combine different technologies to achieve optimal complementarity, with wind and solar for example. With our international expertise, we address this diversity of solutions in order to respond to all the issues, which vary greatly across the geographical areas.

Roof-top power with the Sunstyle solar tile

Solar tiles are ideal for both renovation projects and new constructions, offering several proven advantages:

  • Style: thanks to a wide range of colors, solar tiles replace traditional roofing tiles. The production of energy no longer depends on a third-party solar PV installation, but becomes part of the building.
  • Waterproofing: solar tiles fully withstand bad weather and changing climate conditions.

Gaussan Abbey

The Gaussan Abbey is a novel and unifying project that aims to bring a heritage landmark back to life. A symbol of our history and our traditional know-how, the abbey has become a setting to experiment new ways of life, and future methods for responsible and sustainable consumption.

Driven by Akuo, the collective project is an example of a healthy ecosystem: from the selection and preservation of seeds to the on-site sale and consumption of finished products. Ancient seed varieties are selected according to nutritional properties and climate resilience.

Our commitments

Akuo is committed to developing, building, operating, and maintaining power plants that are as eco-friendly as possible.

For each project, we consult with local communities and support the project’s development with concrete actions that benefit the economy and employment;

We pledge to respect and maintain the biodiversity at all of our project sites. An impact assessment is carried out for each power plant, and offsetting measures are taken whenever necessary;

When a power plant ceases to operate, Akuo either cleans up the site or proposes an alternative in agreement with the landowner. In some cases, we work with the local authority and the owner to study the possibility of repowering*.

Decommissioned or replaced solar panels are recycled.

* replacement of equipment or construction of a new plant

Recycling

SOREN is the organization responsible for collecting and recycling solutions based in Europe with a minimum recovery rate of 95%:

  • Glass, the aluminum framework, metal and junction boxes are recycled (86% of the panel’s weight)
  • 9% of its weight is reused as derived fuel

3,700 metric tons of solar panels were recycled by Soren in 2022 across France.

Responsible by nature

Header_RSE

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has always been central to the values upheld by Akuo. Since the very beginning, Akuo has been guided by the principles of recognized NGOs which have now become best practices:

  • The principles of the AA 1000 standard developed in 2003 by the British NGO Accountability, which defines and measures a systematic stakeholder commitment process; and
  • The Equator Principles for sound management of the social and environmental risks inherent in financing projects.

This commitment is reflected in our governance, our core business, and our human resources.

Our contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals

Akuo’s action is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in September 2015, in particular with

RSE Akuo

Our continuous improvement: Carbon Footprint

As a proactive initiative and ahead of legislative requirements, Akuo measured its Scope 3 Carbon Footprint in 2018. This ambitious step reflects the company’s commitment to understanding and taking concrete measures to reduce its carbon emissions. Our results are very satisfactory as our actual emissions do not exceed one third of the emissions avoided. However, we strive for continuous improvement by regularly updating our Carbon Footprint and by working with our partners and employees to foster dialogue and sharing of best practices, with the aim of making responsibility the norm. At Akuo, we focus on improving our impact rather than trying to offset carbon emissions from our operations, and on consistently enhancing our know-how.

CSR every day

Playing an active part in sustainable and socially responsible development would not be possible without the efforts and involvement of Akuo’s employees throughout their careers, on topics that matter to them.

This concern has been integrated into the tools available to employees by including CSR in the on-boarding program introduced in 2016.

To gain insight into our employees’ aspirations, particularly regarding changes in the company, they frequently respond to surveys to identify areas for improvement. A leadership program has been in place since 2021 to train managers, particularly in CSR and mental health issues, and over 120 employees have already received training. At Akuo, CSR is a guiding principle that points the way forward for our teams and our activities on a daily basis.

We also implement CSR every day in our offices: our employees regularly exchange during the Climate Fresk workshop, and take part in permaculture gardening sessions out on our terraces, or workshops on eco-anxiety and eco-friendly living. Various recycling challenges are frequently organized, and to support our actions outside the office, employees can buy organic food baskets at negotiated rates, and receive competitive incentives to systematically choose the lowest-emission forms of transport for their private and business travel.

La RSE au quotidien

Fostering engagement: CSR Committee and skills-based sponsorship

All of Akuo’s teams take responsibility for CSR. A CSR Committee was therefore created to give employees with different profiles an opportunity to share their common concern. All the key businesses are represented and 80% of the CSR Committee members are non-executives. The committee is organized in voluntary task forces working on 23 strategic environmental, social and governance themes, which make sense to the Akuo Group.

Akuo has also implemented a skills-based sponsorship program: in practical terms and on a rotating basis, employees can devote up to seven days of work per year to projects supported by the Foundation. This strong initiative allows the talent and expertise found at Akuo to reach out to as many people as possible.

Solar Power Europe

We are committed and active, but aware that we represent only a drop in an ocean of decisions, and we fully assume our role as an activist company. Activism is a commitment to a cause to advance it on a large scale, and over the long term. We therefore take action in defending our convictions alongside non-governmental or governmental actors who share the same beliefs.

Our involvement in SolarPower Europe undoubtedly asserts our ambition to take our concerns about improving the value chain to the highest level: product sourcing, recycling, impact on biodiversity, and the role of local entities are all topics that we truly take to heart.

A website developed according to eco-design principles

You are browsing an eco-designed website. Aware that we also leave a digital footprint here, our website has been developed according to the main principles of eco-design.

All user paths and the structure of each page have been designed according to UX principles so that the internet user finds useful information as quickly as possible while consuming as little as possible. We pool the storage of our data with our host OVH and our videos on Youtube in order to significantly save the weight of our website. All of our displayed files are compressed. Each image is thus resized according to the browser and we use tools to save loading time and bandwidth. Finally, we have chosen a lighter tracking system, the number of which is limited to five, allowing less consumption of resources, as well as greater respect for user data.

This new eco-designed version of our website significantly reduces its environmental impact of 18%, compared to the previous version.

Innovation

Innovation

Innovation at Akuo: a unique way of going about our activity

A genuine growth driver for the Group, innovation is deeply rooted in Akuo’s DNA. Eager to develop exemplary regional projects with real meaning, the Akuo group creates concepts that combine technological relevance, environmental added value and societal benefits.

L'innovation chez Akuo

Open and collaborative management focused on innovation

Today, as they have done since the Company was created in 2007, the founders foster, within Akuo, a culture focused on innovation, creativity and collective intelligence. Innovate to drive the energy transition forward everywhere it operates and bring the teams together around meaningful projects: that is Akuo’s guiding vision, and its holistic vision of projects always keeps Akuo one step ahead.

Un management ouvert et collaboratif

Crowdfunding to allow everyone to get involved in the energy transition

To encourage the general public to become increasingly involved in the energy transition, Akuo focused on another innovation: AkuoCoop, its own crowdfunding platform that, since 2017, allows all citizens and businesses to financially participate in energy transition projects near them and to reap the financial rewards. Akuo has chosen to have its own tool in order to ensure that it is reliable and transparent for those who wish to work with us in this respect.

Un investissement participatif

First floating solar plant to give the region a new lease of life

In order to increase the volume of land able to accommodate solar projects, Akuo had the innovative idea of deploying solar panels on water. The Company developed France’s first floating solar plant with a total capacity of 22 MW in Piolenc, in the Rhone valley north of Avignon, France, to breath a new lease of life into an unused artificial lake resulting from a former quarry.

Première centrale solaire flottante

Sunstyle: innovative and esthetically pleasing solar tiles

In 2008, Akuo launched the first version of the Sunstyle® solar roof at Saint Charles International in Perpignan, European leader in fruit and vegetable sales, transport and logistics. The Sunstyle® photovoltaic roof sparked such enthusiasm that it was used to upgrade the entire surface area (68,000 m²) of the roof of the Perpignan warehouse, thus making it the world’s largest building-incorporated solar plant at that time. With an output of 9 MW, this experiment demonstrated the pertinence and potential of this energy-producing construction material. Several years of hindsight have enabled this technology and its performances in terms of energy production and endurance to be thoroughly tried and tested. Since this first successful trial, Sunstyle®’s development has continued, notably resulting in the product’s esthetic refinement with a broader range of possible colors. These solar tiles are now a sought-after component for urban planners and architects.

Our purpose

Header raison

Helping to build a better world!

By developing the use of renewable energy through technology, by farming sustainably and by ensuring respect for ecosystems, we work for the future and for the energy and food sovereignty of the world’s populations.

Eric Scotto
For a long time, renewable energy was called alternative energy, often with a condescending air. Today, we can state loud and clear that there are no alternatives to renewable energy.

More than a mission: a priority

Energy and food independence requires the implementation of innovative projects. But not simply innovative projects - projects with awareness: successful technology is technology designed for the direct benefit of a region and which meets several needs.

With this in mind, we support both financially and on the ground the revolution and progress needed to address the urgent issues of climate change and the need for sustainable food for everyone.

The technology we develop must be adapted to unique, specific contexts, and we ensure that our power plants have a positive impact while fitting into their environment.

This is part of our shared responsibility.

Curbans

Progress at the heart of our vision

With continuous improvement as our driving force, we value learning from the multiple experiences of our projects in operation, across every region, every country and every culture.

We have seen that what works in one place does not always work in another, and that adaptation and agility are vital. We can confirm that our models based on past visions of progress are not suited to the urgency we face and that it is time to raise awareness. Visualizing is good. Acting is better!

We focus on the overall result of a project, and make sure that, once in operation, it brings notable and sustainable benefits for society.

akuo bennington

Boldness for strategy

Since sharing and openness are key factors in every project, our model is based on technological diversification and international operation.

Independent and with a long-term vision, we are present across the entire value chain, leveraging know-how in each activity: the development, financing, construction and operation of our projects.

We have learned that an ecosystem works precisely because it is balanced, varied and in perfect symbiosis with its stakeholders: each one relies on the other and provides for the other in turn.

Diverting all or part of an ecosystem results in canceling the synergies and destroying the whole. It is therefore essential for us to integrate each player of a project, because its success can only be achieved with the full involvement and attention of all.

pls
Our purpose is more essential today than ever before. When we founded Akuo, we already had the goal of promoting a new, decentralized and sustainable energy model, based on local renewable energies. Decentralizing this model has the advantage of using the natural and local resources that are available to us.
